We all have the ability and option to start and run our own business.  Are you after the want of being your own boss and owning your own business?  Don’t underestimate your own power and drive.  You have the ability to be able to make that dream a reality.  If you’ve been dabbling with the thought for a while about how you could run a successful business, understand that there aren’t one-size fits all method of doing so.  Running a business takes hard work, patience, and persistence.  To help you get started on the right foot, here are some tips for running a successful business.

1. Start a business that you are passionate about

Doing something that you love doesn’t ever truly feel like work, right?  Running a business does have its own set of obstacles but if you are able to combine that with your passion, that passion with shine through in your service and your company as well.

2. Open your ears and listen

Listen to your customers, your clients, your employees, your family and most importantly, yourself and your gut instincts.  Listening is a great way to find out what people are truly needing and looking for.  And most importantly?  Listen to hear, not respond.  There will always be a time to respond, you just have to know when it’s appropriate.

3. Be open to constructive feedback

Don’t let a little constructive feedback get you down.  Focus on the “constructive” part and use that feedback to better build your business.  It’s always a good idea to get feedback from those who are viewing your business from the outside.

4. Have a positive mindset

Not every choice you make for your business is going to be a home run, many won’t.  Some days you may strike-out, others you may actually get hit by the pitch.  It happens, life happens.  What will separate your business from others, is the fact that you can get up, dust yourself off and keep moving forward with a positive mind. Those strikes are what build you into a stronger business person.

5. Take care of yourself and your health

Running a business can be super stressful and a 24/7 job.  It’s so important to take care of you and your health to ensure that your business stays strong as well.  Get rest, drink water and put healthy foods in your body.  Not only will it be good for your overall health, it’s good for your mind as well.

6. Don’t be afraid to say “no”

You have to be okay with telling people “no” when running your own business.  Once people find out that you are having success, you may get asked to help out with other projects and tasks here and there.  Don’t put your business and your success on the back-burner just because you are unable to say “no”.

7. Understand the importance of a good accountant

If you don’t know numbers, find someone who does.  Having accurate and clean reports and books is vital to the success of your business.

8. Surround yourself with a good support system

Running a business can sometimes take a village.  Success comes from within but can also come from those that you choose to surround you with.  If you want to be successful in your business, it’s important to have successful people around you as well.

9. Protect yourself and your assets

Talk to legal counsel to make certain that your business is structured in a way that is beneficial to you and your family.  Look into the options of forming a LLC and see what other steps you can take to make certain that your personal assets are separate from your business assets.

10. Know your weaknesses and find a way to make them your strengths

We can’t be good at everything.  It’s just not possible.  Each of us has something that we struggle with.  Own it.  Struggles aren’t necessarily bad, it just means that you have to work even harder to turn them into your strengths. Don’t be afraid to seek out help!

You do have the ability to be able to run your very own successful business.  Use your knowledge, your drive, and your strengths to follow your passion and make it happen.  Remember that the only thing standing in your way of making your business happen is you.  Why not step aside and enjoy the ride?
